What is Battle of the Books?

Sunset View fourth and fifth grade students read the twenty Washington State Children's Choice Picture book nominees and then they are asked questions about the books.  As students read the books they take notes on the setting, genre, characters, plot, and more.  They have a competition (game show type battle) to determine who will represent their class.  Then the classes battle against each other to determine who will represent their school.  Finally, the school representatives meet on February 28th to decide who will be the Tri-City Champion.  This year there are five schools in Kennewick and five from Pasco and Richland to make ten competing schools.  It is Sunset View's first year to compete.

What is the purpose?

The sole purpose of the battle is to expose children to great literature while interacting with peers in a fun and challenging academic setting.

When does this happen?

Students began reading the Children's Choice nominee books during library period on January 3.  They are allowed to work in the library during recess and many other library periods.
